Welcome to the UCLU Jazz Society website. Within these pages you can read about the jazz society’s history, find out how to hire a jazz band, how to join the jazz society and how to become a great jazz master!
The Jazz Society president for 2008 - 2009 Liz Aspinall

The Jazz Society currently consists of the Big Band, Vocal Group and various Small Jazz Bands. All of these groups perform in our annual November Show in The Bloomsbury Theatre, which is a testament to the diverse range of talent within the Jazz Society. If you are interested in hiring a jazz band fill out a form on the hire a jazz band page.
We also offer a lively social scene, for musicians and non-musicians alike. We are always keen to embark on new ventures, and actively encourage our members to realise any musical projects they may wish to carry out.
A summary of the last academic year
Our annual November Show in The Bloomsbury Theatre was entitled Unprotected Sax and was a resounding success featuring no less than seven ensembles - the Big Band, the Vocal Group, Latin, Blues, Swing and Soul bands, and the Sax Quartet. All of these bands are jazz bands for hire.
In addition we also had the opportunity to upstage A Blues Brothers Tribute (UCLU Garage Theatre Workshop, February 2007), by performing a bigger and better version The Bloomsbury Blues Brothers in The Bloomsbury Theatre the week before Unprotected Sax. This show was also a great success - despite being during reading week, a time when many students are away from the UCL campus.
The jazz society went on tour to Cologne at Easter and performed three gigs, as well as enjoying an excellent opportunity for members to socialise together. We hope to go on tour again in the next academic year. Details to follow shortly.
We also participated in the annual Christmas concert in the quad, in aid of the charity SANE, staged a joint concert with UCLU Music Society, and performed a second society show Casual Sax in the Edward Lewis Lecture Theatre.
We have continuted to hold Jazz Jammin’ (our weekly jazz jam session) in the Union’s Phineas Bar and have provided small jazz bands for various gigs within and without the University. Social events have consisted of pub crawls, a Christmas Dinner, trips to gigs and, of course, post-rehearsal drinks.
